Introduction
Nordic walking (NW) has been demonstrated to be a beneficial activity in multiple pathologies, nevertheless, it has never been studied in asthma.
Objectives
To assess the feasibility of a Nordic walking program in patients with asthma, and to evaluate their satisfaction with the activity.
Materials and methods
Feasibility study of a randomized controlled trial. Patients with asthma from sanitary area of A Coruña are recruited: non-smokers, without any respiratory disease or recent respiratory infections (<4 weeks), without any contraindication to assess any measurement or to do physical exercise. Study group participates in a six-session program of NW, performed at 75% of the theoretical maximal heart rate, conducted in an urban environment of A Coruña city. Control group and study group attend two educational sessions. Exercise tolerance is evaluated through six-minutes walking test (6MWT); physical activity through International Physical Activity Questionnaire, short form (IPAQ); and lung function are evaluated to categorize the sample. As result variables, health related quality of life is assessed with mini-Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (miniAQLQ), asthma-related symptoms and asthma control with Asthma Control Test (ACT) and with Test of Adherence to Inhalers (TAI). Furthermore, dyspnea is evaluated with modified Medical Research Council (mMRC). Through an online form patients give their feedback in relation with NW. Intragroup and intergroups differences are analysed (Wilcoxon and U of Mann-Whitney test, respectively).
Results
Seven patients with asthma were recruited (2 males; 53,29 ± 6,97 years old). One participant drop-out study because of reasons non-related with it. After intervention, any significant difference is observed in any outcome (Table 1). Participants of study group are satisfied with intervention received (NW), participants of control group are interested in trying it, and both groups think that educational sessions are useful.
Discussion
Due to short period of duration of intervention, any difference is observed in result outcomes (intervention was initially programmed to 24 sessions, and it was interrupted because of the first lockdown after first wave of COVID-19).
Conclusion
NW is a well-accepted activity by patients with asthma and is a feasible activity in an urban environment.
