    Introduction

Populations are rapidly ageing, as a result, there has been an increase in chronic and non-communicable diseases raising the strain on healthcare services. In this scenario, the only sustainable solution is to develop strategies to keep citizens in good health for as long as possible.

The SIENHA project is a consortium of several European higher education institutions with the aim to establish an educational network and build a knowledge platform centred on healthy ageing.

    Aim

We aim to describe, collate, and synthesize current scientific and grey literature describing competencies that health and social professionals should develop to promote healthy ageing across the lifespan.

    Methods

We performed a scoping review using the framework described by Arksey & O'Malley and the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. For the identification of relevant studies, we screened scientific databases and grey literature from 2000 to 2021. Covidence screening and data extraction tools were used for the selection process by pairs of reviewers and data of the included documents were extracted using a standardized form. A stakeholder consultation was held in each of the participating countries.

    Results

We finally included 20 documents including a large variety of competencies addressing several domains. However, most competencies were specifically targeting the older adult population and only 6 focused on promoting healthy aging during the lifespan. Regarding the stakeholder consultation, there was a clear consensus on the need to reconsider the definition of healthy aging and its impact by including a lifespan and participative approach to its meaning, design, and implementation. Also, the necessity for an inter/trans professional approach to expand the boundaries of what implies today's healthy aging was highlighted.

    Conclusion

This scoping review provides an overview of health and social professional competencies needed to promote healthy aging during the lifespan.
