Abstract: Chronic pain is a symptom associated, among other causes, with the sensitization of structures of the peripheral and central nervous systems, which also ends up causing neuroplastic changes at the brain level. These neuroplastic changes facilitate the experience of pain in parallel with the activation of nociceptors. For this reason, the treatments applied to chronic pain should also aim to normalize the pain perception at the cortical level.

Material i métodos

Introduction
Chronic pain is a symptom associated, among other causes, with the sensitization of structures of the peripheral and central nervous systems, which also ends up causing neuroplastic changes at the brain level. These neuroplastic changes facilitate the experience of pain in parallel with the activation of nociceptors. For this reason, the treatments applied to chronic pain should also aim to normalize the pain perception at the cortical level.
Objectives
The objective of this article is to present the approach to chronic pain through "pain neuroscience education" (PNE) within physiotherapy treatment. Thus, facilitating the obtaining of better results in the treatment for the reduction of chronic pain.
Material and methods
The presentation will reveal the general context of the treatment of chronic pain, within which the PNE is found. Propose the different specifications of this approach and the peculiarities of its adaptation in the usual physiotherapy treatment.
Results
The PNE offers notable improvements in the reduction of the sensation of pain, optimizing the result of other treatments when applied in a complementary way, offering less evidence to apply this intervention in an isolated way.
Conclusions
PNE is an approach in the process of being implemented in chronic pain treatment protocols. That it has shown improvements in the perception of chronic pain, and that it proposes a new approach in the physiotherapy treatment of chronic pain.
