Abstract: The intensive care unit acquired weakness (ICUAW) is a constant element in the recovery of the critical patient. It manifests as bilateral, symmetrical atrophy and/or loss of muscle mass in the extremities and of the respiratory muscles. Diaphragmatic weakness is a frequent problem in patients admitted to critical care units, assuming a negative effect on the days of mechanical ventilation requirement, days of stay in the ICU and, finally, days of hospital stay. The Respiratory Physiotherapist has a key role not only in the treatment of diaphragmatic weakness but also in the assessment process.
Abstract : La debilidad adquirida en la unidad de cuidados intensivos (DAU) es un elemento constante en la recuperación del paciente crÃtico. Se manifiesta como una atrofia y/o pérdida de masa muscular en las extremidades de forma bilateral, simétrica y de la musculatura respiratoria. La debilidad diafragmática es un problema frecuente en los pacientes ingresados en las unidades de crÃticos, suponiendo un efecto negativo en los dÃas de requerimiento de ventilación mecánica, dÃas de estancia en UCI y por último dÃas de estancia hospitalaria. El Fisioterapeuta respiratorio tiene un papel clave no solo en el tratamiento de la debilidad diafragmática si no también en el proceso de valoración.
